A3Flatbed
Roland VersaSTUDIO BF-16

Overview

The Roland VersaSTUDIO BF-16 is a desktop UV flatbed printer that prints directly onto objects and flat materials up to A3 size and 90 mm high. It uses Roland DG D-UAB UV ink in six colours, CMYK plus white and gloss, cured instantly by a built-in UV-LED lamp. Compact enough for a small studio or retail counter, it is designed for businesses starting out in personalisation and for shops adding a new service.

A3 Print Area And 90 mm Object Height

The BF-16 prints an area of 420 × 297 mm in A3 landscape format and accepts objects up to 430 × 340 mm, 90 mm thick and 5 kg in weight. That is room for several phone cases, notebooks or promotional items in a single job, or one larger panel.

White, Colour And Gloss In One Pass

The BF-16 can print white and CMYK at the same time, or lay down three layers of white, CMYK and gloss simultaneously. White gives colour an opaque base on clear or coloured items, gloss adds a premium finish, and printing the layers together keeps them in register on items such as clear phone cases.

Productive Bi-Directional Printing

In standard mode the BF-16 prints CMYK at up to 2.08 m²/h, which is about 3 minutes 36 seconds for a full A3 sheet. High-quality mode runs at 960 × 1,200 dpi for fine detail and small type.

Built-In Vacuum Table

A vacuum table comes as standard. It holds thin materials flat at the press of a button, and a printed scale on the table makes positioning items quick and repeatable.

VersaWorks 7 RIP Included

The BF-16 comes with Roland DG's VersaWorks 7 RIP. Special colour plates for white and gloss are generated with a single button, and built-in colour management tools help you match specific colours.

GREENGUARD Gold Certified D-UAB Ink

D-UAB ink dries instantly, offers a wide colour gamut and adheres well to plastics such as ABS, polycarbonate, PET, PVC and TPU, as well as leather and wood. It holds GREENGUARD Gold certification for low VOC emissions into indoor air and does not contain nickel compounds. Ink is supplied in 220 ml bottles and poured into the ink tanks at the back of the printer.

Simple Operation

An LCD panel with dedicated keys for moving the table, printing a nozzle test, cleaning and switching on the vacuum keeps everyday operation straightforward. Automatic cleaning, flushing and ink circulation run at intervals you set to keep the print head in condition.

FAQ

What materials can the BF-16 print on?

In Roland DG's adhesion tests, D-UAB ink adhered well to ABS, polycarbonate, PET, PVC, TPU, leather and wood. Acrylic, aluminium, stainless steel and glass need a pre-treatment, because the BF-16 has no primer ink, and polypropylene is not recommended. Results vary by material brand and print conditions, so always test before production.

Can the BF-16 print white and gloss?

Yes. It prints white and CMYK at the same time, or white, CMYK and gloss as three simultaneous layers. VersaWorks 7 generates the white and gloss plates automatically.

Does the BF-16 need fume extraction?

The BF-16 has no built-in deodorising filter, so think about ventilation where it will be installed. It has a spigot for connecting an external filtration unit. UV protection glasses should be worn when operating the printer.

Can I print on objects of different heights?

The BF-16 prints flat and raised objects up to 90 mm thick. Items that vary in height from unit to unit may need to be printed in uni-directional mode, which takes about twice as long as bi-directional printing.

How is the BF-16 installed?

Installation is carried out by a service technician, even though the BF-16 is a VersaSTUDIO desktop model. The print head is fitted at the factory, and the printer connects directly to its control PC with the supplied LAN cable, not through a network hub. VersaWorks 7 runs on Windows for the BF-16.
