Overview
The Roland VersaSTUDIO BD Series brings UV flatbed printing to the desktop, printing full-colour graphics, white ink and special effects directly onto objects and flat items. It now comes in two sizes: the BD-8, an A5-format model, and the BD-12, an A4-format model that Roland added to the series in 2025. Both suit small businesses, shop fronts, home offices and in-house teams personalising products in small runs.
The two printers share the same core technology: the same print head, 220 ml ECO-UV EUV5 ink cartridges in a six-slot CMYK + white + primer or gloss set-up, a built-in UV-LED lamp, up to 1,440 dpi and room for objects up to 102 mm tall. The BD-12 adds a larger 305 × 210 mm print area (against 210 × 148 mm on the BD-8), takes objects up to 5 kg instead of 3 kg, scans faster at up to 760 mm/s, and comes with a smartphone tray and positioning jig to make alignment easier.
Choose A5 or A4 Format
Pick the BD-8 for compact work such as phone cases and small gifts, or the BD-12 for larger items or more pieces per batch. Both use the same inks, software and workflow.
Print Directly onto 3D Objects
Dedicated print modes cover flat items, fast text work, cylindrical objects and Distance printing, which uses larger dots to keep results sharp on convex, concave or uneven surfaces.
Professional Print Quality
The BD Series uses the same print head and UV lamp design as Roland's MG series, with True Rich Color 3 settings for vivid yet natural colour and dense white on dark surfaces.
Primer, Gloss and Special Effects
Primer improves adhesion on materials such as some metals, glass and plastics; gloss adds gloss and matte finishes, textures and embossed effects, with 72 ready-made texture patterns in VersaWorks 7. On the BD-8, gloss requires firmware Ver. 2.6 or later.
Optional Rotary Axis for Cylindrical Items
The motor-driven OA-RA-8 and OA-RA-12 units print all the way around cylindrical items 10 to 50 mm in diameter, such as lipsticks and mini bottles, up to 170 mm long on the BD-8 and 265 mm on the BD-12. Users can fit them themselves.
Simple Set-up and Software
A single power button with a multi-coloured status LED and the BD Utility app keep operation simple. The bundled design and output software (Roland DG Connect Designer on current units), with smartphone-camera alignment using AR markers. VersaWorks and Roland DG Connect are also supported.
Low-Maintenance Design
Automatic cleaning runs at intervals based on what you print, and a manual cleaning tool, user-replaceable cap, built-in deodorising filter and 1.8 litre waste cartridge keep routine care simple.

FAQ
What is the difference between the BD-8 and BD-12?
They share the same print head, EUV5 inks, UV-LED lamp, 1,440 dpi resolution and 102 mm maximum object height. The BD-12 is the larger model: it prints up to 305 × 210 mm (A4) against 210 × 148 mm (A5) on the BD-8, accepts objects up to 335 × 240 mm and 5 kg (BD-8: 240 × 178 mm and 3 kg), scans at up to 760 mm/s instead of 600 mm/s, and adds a smartphone tray and positioning jig for alignment. It is also bigger and heavier at 990 × 710 × 580 mm and 80 kg, compared with 768 × 586 × 580 mm and 61 kg for the BD-8.
How tall an object can the BD Series print on?
Both models print on objects up to 102 mm (4 in.) thick. Distance mode helps keep prints sharp on curved or uneven surfaces where the head cannot sit close to every part of the item.
Can the BD-8 and BD-12 print around bottles and pens?
Yes, with the optional rotary axis unit: OA-RA-8 for the BD-8 and OA-RA-12 for the BD-12. Both take cylindrical items from 10 to 50 mm in diameter; the printable length is up to 170 mm on the BD-8 and up to 265 mm on the BD-12. Conical shapes are not supported.
Should I choose the primer or the gloss ink configuration?
Both configurations use CMYK and white. Primer improves ink adhesion on materials such as some metals, glass and plastics, while gloss adds gloss and matte finishes, textures and embossed effects. On the BD-8, the gloss configuration requires firmware Ver. 2.6 or later.
What software comes with the BD Series?
Both models include Roland DG Connect Designer for design and output, the BD Utility app for operating the printer and the Roland DG Connect app. The BD-8 works with VersaWorks 6 (Ver. 6.20 or later) or VersaWorks 7, and the BD-12 with VersaWorks 7. Texture and embossing effects are created in VersaWorks 7.
