3M Digital Media: How-To
Welcome to our guide on the precise application of 3M vinyl films, whether you're working with monomeric or cast varieties. Proper application ensures longevity, durability, and a flawless finish for your projects. Below, we've compiled essential steps and tips to help you achieve professional results every time.
How to apply 3M vinyl film: step by step
- Let the print dry fully. Solvent and eco-solvent prints need at least 24 hours before laminating or applying. Latex prints come off the printer dry.
- Laminate if the job needs protection. Use the overlaminate 3M recommends for your film, for example 8518 series gloss, luster or matte on wraps.
- Clean the surface. Wash off dirt with mild detergent and water, remove grease with a solvent cleaner, then wipe with a mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water just before application.
- Check the temperature. Apply within the film's recommended temperature range; for 3M IJ180mC on flat surfaces that is +4 °C to +38 °C, and +18 °C to +22 °C is easiest.
- Position with a hinge. Tape the graphic in place, peel back part of the liner and squeegee from the centre outwards with firm, overlapping strokes.
- Work curves and recesses with heat. Cast films such as IJ180mC can be warmed to conform to rivets and corrugations; follow 3M's bulletin for the film you are using.
- Finish the edges. Re-squeegee all edges and trim cleanly so moisture cannot get under the film.
Tips for a long-lasting result
- Use cast film (IJ180mC, IJ35C) for curves and vehicles; monomeric film (IJ15, IJ16) is for flat, short-term graphics.
- Films with air-release adhesive, such as IJ180mC and IJ35C, are applied dry only.
- Do the final IPA wipe immediately before applying, because dust settles quickly.
- Test adhesion on unfamiliar or painted surfaces before a full installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply 3M IJ180mC wet?
No. 3M specifies dry application only for IJ180mC.
How long should prints dry before laminating?
At least 24 hours for solvent and eco-solvent prints. Latex prints leave the printer dry and can be laminated straight away.
